How to handle sold-out products on Shopify: push down, hide, or leave in place.

By the Appcado team7 min read

A sold-out product is not a neutral object. Left at the top of a collection it takes the best shelf space in the store, pushes buyable products below the fold, and teaches shoppers that clicking your grid leads to dead ends. The question is not whether to handle sold-out items — it is which of three treatments each product should get.

The three treatments

  • Push down when the product will restock. It stays discoverable and keeps its SEO value, but stops occupying prime grid positions.
  • Hide when the product is seasonal or discontinued. Shoppers never meet a dead end, and the page returns when you want it back.
  • Leave in place when scarcity is the message — drops and limited runs, where "sold out" is proof the product moves.

Most stores need a mix. A restocking bestseller should sink to the bottom of its collections; last season’s colorway should disappear; the collab piece should stay put with its badge. Treating all three the same is how stores end up with a first page of grey "sold out" tiles.

Why manual handling stops working

On a small catalog you can re-sort by hand. At 40 collections with daily inventory movement, keeping sold-out products at the bottom means re-sorting every collection every day — and remembering to move each product back the moment it restocks. The restore step is the one that slips: products come back into stock and stay buried, which costs real sales.

This is the job our app does
AC: Sold Out Push Down & Hide re-sorts collections the moment inventory changes, hides or pushes down sold-out products by rule, and restores them to their original position on restock.

Whichever tool you use, hold it to two standards: it should react to inventory events in real time rather than on a nightly schedule, and every action should be reversible — original sort positions restored, not approximated.
